Writing great blog posts

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the main priority behind your blog posts. Think of SEO in an article as being the engine; and the form, structure, and content of the article as being the rest of the car. Some writers only care about SEO, so they produce content that has all the attributes that get the attention of search engines; without care or concern whether the post was engaging or motivating for the reader (also known as your customer). It is as if you have shown them this fantastic car engine, but there are no seats, windows, sound system, heater, A/C… you get the picture. The customer walks away scratching their head… and you never want the customer walking away for any reason. Writing for SEO purposes, and writing to attract and captivate your audience, can seem like two conflicting goals. However, if you want to improve your search engine ranking, you will need to have proficient writing skills. This post provides four of several tips for writing blog posts that are both readable and SEO-friendly. Consider the following:
- Plan before you write
It is important to plan or think sensibly about the message of your post. Prioritize what it is that you want to tell your readers. Perhaps your post will be about a single facet of, or an answer to a central question you want to answer. You should also determine what you want your readers to do at the end of the article. To gain some clarity, you should write down the answers to these questions before every blog post.
- Devise a consistent structure for your blog post
Every post should have a clear structure. Every post should have the following parts:
- An introduction (this is where you introduce your topic)
- A body (this is where the main message is written)
- A conclusion (summarization of the most important ideas)
- Outline or write down what you want to say in all three sections.
- Use paragraphs
Each paragraph should have its own idea or subject. Determine the main idea of each paragraph. You should be able to summarize that main idea in just one sentence. Headings are a great way to structure the whole page. They’re important not just for readability, but for SEO as well. Make sure you use your keywords in some of the subheadings, not in each one of them.
- Use signal words
Don’t be offended if readers do not hang on every word that you have used to make your post engaging. It’s human nature for most people to scan an article. Signal words help people to scan through your text and grasp the main ideas. The following are well traveled signal words:
- first of all
- secondly
- finally
- nevertheless
- surely
- indeed
Readers will instantly get that a conclusion will follow words like ‘consequently’. Signal words are crucial for adding structure to your text.
